Categories and Criteria
ELIGIBILITY
All entries shall be architectural projects designed by Florida registered architects who are members in good standing of the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The project may be anywhere in the world. Projects which have won awards in other programs are eligible for submission. Award winning projects in this program may not be resubmitted in future years. All entries must be submitted in the manner herein specified, additional eligibility requirement may apply, please see specific entry category.
DESIGN AWARD CATEGORIES
Awards may be given by the designated jury, at their discretion, in the following levels:
• Excellence Award
• Merit Award
• Citation Award
Design Excellence/ Residential
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned projects that are primarily residential in nature. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world, but must have been completed within the immediate
past five calendar years. Entries may include new single-family residences, multi-family residences, affordable housing projects (not related to an institutional facility or public sector), live/work units (residential component needs to be more than 50% of the project area), dormitories, boarding houses, convents/monasteries, fraternity/sorority houses, and/or assisted living facilities. Award winners are subject to verification.
Design Excellence/Non-Residential
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned projects that are primarily non-residential in nature. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been completed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include the following building types: commercial, industrial, hotel/hospitality, healthcare, day-care facilities, retail, and/or restaurant. Award winners are subject to verification.
Design Excellence/ Civic/Institutional
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned projects of a public, societal and/or institutional nature. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been completed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include the following building types: public buildings, religious/worship facilities, schools/educational facilities, museums, sports arenas/stadiums, theatres, libraries, and/or correctional facilities. Award winners are subject to verification.
Urban Design/Planning?
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, Master Planning or Regionally Scaled Plans. Entries may be urban design projects, planning programs, civic improvements, campus plans, environmental programs, or redevelopment projects. Projects should not be individual buildings.
Object Design/Furniture Design/Unique Small Project
This Award is designed to reward an exceptionally well-designed small structure (such as a gazebo, entry feature, pavilion, etc.) or a custom furniture piece or custom designed object (such as a coffee pot, etc.)
Test of Time Award
This Award is designed to reward a project that was constructed at least 25 years ago, that is still an outstanding example of Design Excellence. Can be a Civic, Commercial, or Residential Project. The project must have been designed by an AIA Palm Beach Member Architect and still in active use and in good condition.
Historic? Preservation
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned projects that strive to
preserve our architectural history, heritage and legacy. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world, but must have been completed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include the preservation, renovation, restoration, rehabilitations, reconstruction, and/or adaptive re-use of any single building or group of buildings that are either listed in the National Register of Historic Places; or a contributing property in a National Register of Historic Places listed district; or designated as historic property under an official municipal, county, special district or state designation, law, ordinance or resolution either individually or as a contributing property in a district; or determined eligible by a State Historic Preservation Officer for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, either individually or as a contributing property in a district.
Sustainable
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned projects that strive to promote awareness of the built environment through environmentally sensitive design practices. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been completed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include buildings or groups of buildings of any type within the 2 subcategories. Entries must demonstrate the successful use of design elements, techniques, materials, and/or other strategies that have a positive effect on the natural environment. Examples are projects that reduce waste, save water and/or energy, use renewable materials or resources, reduce the use of fossil fuels, etc. Projects must have been granted or fully applied for LEED certification or other “green” building designations/program such as those offered by Green Globes, Florida Green Building Coalition, or other nationally or regionally established program.
Interiors
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned architectural building interiors. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been completed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include new construction, additions, renovation, or historic preservation/restoration. Award winners are subject to verification.
Unbuilt
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, commissioned architectural designs not yet built or complete. Eligible projects must be designed by a licensed Architect who is an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing, and who practices within Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been designed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may include buildings or groups of buildings of any type, urban designs, master plans, additions, or renovations. Award winners are subject to verification. Entries must be commissioned for compensation on behalf of a client. Construction must not be substantially complete prior to the deadline for receipt of entries.
Student Project – No Fee
This award recognizes outstanding examples of recent, architectural designs by students. Eligible projects must be designed by a student (or group of students) who are currently enrolled in an accredited architectural degree program and are residents of Palm Beach County. Projects submitted may be located anywhere in the world but must have been designed within the immediate past five calendar years. Entries may be projects that are academic (executed as a class or terminal project under the supervision of at least one professor of an accredited architectural school); a competition entry (executed in direct response to an organized design competition entry requirement); or theoretical/research projects which are executed in the interest of the advancement of the profession). Award winners are subject to verification.
We encourage our members and firms to pass on this information and encourage any students and/or student interns they may know or work with to submit their projects. The standard entry fees will be waived for Student Projects.
Important Note: Projects will be judged separately in the categories listed above. Projects can be entered in multiple categories but can only win in one (1) Category. It is up to the applicant to decide which category(s) fits their project best. In the case of potential multiple categories, selecting the category(s) that reflects the predominant use/occupancy of the project is strongly recommended.
HONOR AWARD CATEGORIES
The James H. Anstis, FAIA Gold Medal Award
This award recognizes an individual architect in Palm Beach County who has distinguished himself or herself in a manner resulting in a profound impact on the profession over an extended period of time. This is the highest award that AIA Palm Beach can bestow on one of its members and only one may be given in a year. Any individual who has been a member of AIA for a minimum of 10 years is eligible. The individual's long-term, noteworthy accomplishments in the AIA, as well as community organizations or governmental bodies, must demonstrate distinguishable results characterizing one's career in a manner over and above what is normally expected. AIA Palm Beach members in good standing are eligible by nominations made by any AIA Palm Beach member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
John Stetson, FAIA Service Award
AIA Palm Beach Chapter has established this award in the memory of John Stetson, FAIA, whose devoted service to the AIA Chapter was over and above his official capacities. It is hoped that this award will perpetuate John’s memory and those things for which he stood in our profession. This award will be given to an AIA Palm Beach Chapter member for outstanding service to the chapter in good standing are eligible by nominations made by any AIA Palm Beach member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Hilliard T. Smith Community Service Award
In honor of AIA Florida Past President Hilliard T. Smith of Palm Beach, this award is given to recognize an architect whose leadership in community activities and service has been a direct benefit to the profession or community. The individual's leadership and service must demonstrate, beyond any reasonable doubt, qualities, outcomes in works of art, programs or civic influences that have benefited the profession or the community. Any member of AIA Palm Beach Chapter in good standing, whose leadership in a community fulfills the intent and purpose of this award is eligible. AIA Palm Beach members in good standing are eligible by nominations made by any AIA Palm Beach member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Firm of the Year Award
This award recognizes outstanding achievement in design, community services, education, and service to the profession and the AIA by an architectural firm. Projects, accomplishments and service submitted must reflect a period of at least 10 years. The firm’s principals must be AIA Palm Beach members in good standing.
Landscape Architect of the Year Award
This award will be given to a landscape architect in Palm Beach County who has exemplified interest, ingenuity, and outstanding performance which enhances the architectural built environment. Nominations may be made by any AIA Palm Beach Chapter member.
Consulting Firm of the Year Award
This award will be given to a consulting firm (ie. Structural or MEP) in Palm Beach County who has strived to respect, and/or enhance the architectural built environment through the ingenuity of building systems and/or components. Nominations may be made by any AIA Palm Beach Chapter member.
Associate Member of the Year Award
This award will be given to an Associate AIA Member whose leadership, activities and service to AIA Palm Beach Chapter have been a direct benefit to the profession. Nominations may be made by any AIA Palm Beach Chapter member in good standing.
Emerging Professional Mentorship Award
This award recognizes an architect or firm who has shown an unwavering commitment to mentoring and developing Associates and Emerging Professionals in his or her/their firm and/or elsewhere in the Palm Beach County region. Any licensed architect member of AIA Palm Beach in good standing or firm with principal that is a licensed architect member of AIA Palm Beach is eligible for this award. Candidates may not nominate themselves. Nominations may be made by any AIA Palm Beach Chapter member or AIAS member in good standing.
Educator of the Year Award
This award will be given in recognition of an educator in Palm Beach County whose outstanding performance has made a significant contribution to the advancement of architectural education through college or university teaching. Nominations may be made by any AIA Palm Beach Chapter member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Builder of the Year Award
This award recognizes a company or firm in Palm Beach County who has exemplified a sincere and genuine interest in encouraging and affecting outstanding craftsmanship and workmanship in the performance of work on a specific project. Such company may be a general contractor or subcontractor.
Any company licensed in Palm Beach County who has fulfilled the intent and purpose of this award may be nominated.
Bob Graham Architectural Awareness Award
The Bob Graham, Honorary AIA, Architectural Awareness Award is given to an individual citizen or public official who is not an architect, and who by their interest, activity and concern for the profession of architecture, shall have advanced the cause of good design and planning and/or contributed to the dignity and value of the architectural profession. The Award is named in honor of Bob Graham, two-time Governor of Florida and member of the U.S. Senate, who has been designated an honorary member of the AIA for his outstanding support of architecture in both his public and private life.
Any person who is not an architect is eligible. Submission is not required by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter AIA member.
Craftsman Award
This award will be given to a craftsman in Palm Beach County, Florida who has exemplified interest, ingenuity, and outstanding performance in the pursuit of one's trade or craft. This award pertains to outstanding craftsmanship performed in any phase of construction.
Any craftsman who is a resident of Palm Beach County, Florida and who has performed outstanding workmanship in the pursuit of a craft or trade is eligible. In order to recognize the talent in our state, the immediate past recipient is ineligible. Submission is not required by the nominee. Firms may be nominated by any Palm Beach Chapter AIA member.
Allied Member of Year
The award recognizes an AIA Palm Beach allied member who has gone above and beyond to support the association and the architecture profession. Must be an AIA Palm Beach allied member in good standing. Any AIA Palm Beach member may nominate.
